Islands in Thailand

Islands in Thailand Tips for Thailand

The islands in Thailand are amazing! Enjoy the beauty of Hawaii or Fiji for way less money. Among the many Thai islands are places to party, places to relax, and even islands with no electricity where you can play Robinson Crusoe.
These tips for enjoying the islands in Thailand will help you get the most out of your visit.
1- Ko or Koh in Thailand?
Since koh, the word for island in Thai, is transliterated into English from Thai script, either spelling works fine. Koh sounds closer to the true pronunciation of ‘goh’ rather than ‘koe’, however, many Westerners prefer the shorter ‘ko’.
2- The Sanctuary (Read more)
The Sanctuary at Haad Thien, Koh Phangan, is one of the island’s secret little places.

4- Rainy Season Islands
Koh Tao and islands on the east coast receive less rain than other islands during the monsoon in Thailand (June – Sept). Koh chang is the wettest island, followed by Phuket and islands in Krabi.

6- Don’t Swim Near Sewage Drains
When swimming on the beach, avoid drainage areas and pipes; pick another place to swim! Many times raw, untreated sewage is drained directly into the ocean, particularly in the islands. Infections, HEPA, and other nasties can result
7- Koh Lanta Long Beach
Long Beach – known locally as Pra Ae Beach – is the best beach on the island of Koh Lanta. Koh Lanta is large, but many beaches in the south are rocky and impossible to swim during low tide. Long Beach has a pleasant vibe.
8- Go to Sairee on Koh Tao
The ferry arrives in Mae Haad on Koh Tao. Mae Haad is the busiest port on the island; the beach and setting aren’t as nice. Don’t get talked into a guesthouse there, walk north (left) for 20 minutes to Sairee – a much nicer area of Koh Tao.
9- Watch Out for Bad Power
Many of the islands use generators for power, these can create power surges and sags on the line when they are started. Don’t charge your laptop or devices while you are away, you should be there to pull the plug if needed!
10- Bungalows
Charming bungalows are a great part of staying in the Thai islands, however, not all are created equal. Concrete bungalows have less insects, but they get scorching hot. Choose a wooden bungalow with a mosquito net provided.
11- Don’t Pay Entrance at the Full Moon Party
Don’t buy the “entrance bracelets” from people blocking access to the beach during the Koh Phangan Full Moon Party. There is no entrance charge to the party and these people are scammers selling overpriced bracelets.
12- Koh Lipe Thailand (Read more)

13- The Islands Cost More

The islands cost significantly more than mainland Thailand. Take toiletries, sunscreen, cigarettes, and other supplies with you rather than purchasing them from shops on the island.
